Back in the day, I believed that black coffee was for hard-ass farmers and for those who didn't like good taste.
For me, drinking black coffee was considered to be weird, and adding cream and sugar was perfectly normal. If you are like me, then I'm sure this sounds like the impression that you've had (or have). However, times are changing.
New research regarding black coffee is emerging, and coffee tastes different than it used to.
There are a lot of new experiences to be had by consuming black coffee. When I used to work as a barista in a coffee shop that valued quality, I saw many people who loved cream and sugar switch to black coffee.
It is a rewarding journey and one that is interesting to witness.
On every mug of coffee, you see mornings that are bettered, faces refreshed, and gratitude. And now for the reasons why you should be drinking black coffee.
Coffee Is Improving
Especially in recent years, the world of coffee is changing vastly and improving; specialty coffee is now attributed to over 50% of sales in the coffee market across the US.
Its flavor is much different from old school coffee brews, it is now unique, smooth, and does not take ashy like in the past. In years past, black coffee generally would taste of peanuts, dark chocolate, or charcoal. During the entire coffee process, we are learning to create and enjoy richer brews of black coffee.
I prefer coffee that is processed by natural means from Ethiopia (the original birthplace of coffee).
Generally, this black coffee has robust and fruity flavors, a flowery aroma, and a thicker body.
I also highly enjoy bright Guatemalans from around the Antigua region. They have a crisper acidity, floral aroma, and a sweetness akin to caramel.
While coffee by nature does have a bitterness, specialty coffee is far less bitter and features other flavor tones that work in harmony to bring a great cup of black coffee together.
There are new flavors like we've never experienced with black coffee in the past, and adding cream and sugar to it just negates all of these amazing flavors.
Black Coffee is Healthy
Aside from the palatability of black coffee, let's discuss for a minute the health benefits of it.
The discussion about the benefits of black coffee on your health has only gotten stronger over time. Every year, new studies are coming to the surface that proves black coffee has some pretty impressive health benefits.
Here are some of the health benefits that have been scientifically proven:
- Lower risk of Melanoma
- Improved cardiovascular health
- Reduced risk of Type 2 Diabetes
- Lower chance of Parkinson's Disease
- Lower rates of Chronic Liver Disease
The health benefits of black coffee can go on and on. Unless you are the fraction of the population that has reported sleep, heart, or anxiety problems from consuming caffeine, then coffee is considered to be extremely healthy for you. That said, what you put into your coffee such as cream and sugar is another story.
The main concern with coffee additives is the amount of sugar.
It is a well-known fact now that sugar is linked to several negative health problems.
In America especially, we have a hard time avoiding these aspects. Just from consuming large amounts of sugar, you are at higher risk for heart disease, cancer, obesity, and many others.
Remove the sugar from sweetener and cream from your black coffee and you can enjoy all of the health benefits with none of the negative. And now let's go over the emotional benefits that black coffee can bring into your life.
Discover a Sense of Wonder Again
While the world of specialty coffee is full of new flavors and tones to discover, that is not all.
There are hundreds of innovative coffee products that are on the shelves and online yearly. For instance, we have self-filtering pour-over brewers, espresso makers, and home coffee roasters. Farmers, coffee innovators, and roasters are making new experiences in the world of coffee as well.
The list can go on and on.
There is so much about coffee that comes to light every year, and there is so much more to explore in this industry.
The growth of the coffee world has caused a lot of coffee lovers to find a childlike sense of wonder. Tasting amazing coffee is fun and exciting while brewing with care and making it a part of your morning routine can breathe new life into your day.
Personally, coffee has taught me to explore and enjoy the little things in life.
It has opened me up to a new world of understanding and gratitude.
And it helps me find balance amid my chaotic mornings. I have seen the same from dozens of people around the globe. Before, they may not have cared what it was or where it came from. But in a short amount of time, they were both fascinated by its origins and were ready to learn more.
I didn't turn them into coffee snobs, however.
They just saw the wonders that surround specialty coffee and were naturally drawn to it.
Thanks to coffee, they had a new appreciation and wonder about the world around them. Black coffee is no longer just boring caffeine-laden puddle water anymore. It is an experience that opens your senses and renews your mind.
